German umbrella manufacturer Eberhard Goebel (EuroSCHIRM) has developed a functional “hands-free umbrella” that attaches to a regular backpack with a hip belt and can be easily directed for optimal protection. You get both hands free, which is ideal for hikers who want to use trekking poles, read a map, or use a GPS under the umbrella.
Great care has been taken with material selection to make the umbrella lightweight and durable. The fabric has a Teflon® coating, and almost no metal parts are used in the construction. The shaft is made of fiberglass and can be extended up to one meter.
The weight is 366 grams, and with a diameter of 114 cm, both the hiker and backpack are protected from rain. It’s expected to hit stores sometime after summer at a price of approximately SEK 600.
