Outdoor Research Alibi: hybrid softshells for alpine climbing
The 2011 Alibi jackets and pants combined waterproof protection in exposed areas with breathable softshell panels.
Ice climbing and alpine mountaineering put both people and equipment to the test. Training helps climbers develop fitness and performance on ice and rock, but clothing must also be dependable. Outdoor Research designed its durable Alibi jackets and pants for these demanding conditions.
The Ventia Hybrid construction combined technical fabrics to provide windproof and waterproof protection where climbers were most exposed to moisture, and greater breathability where they generated the most heat. The Alibi range targeted ambitious mountaineers and athletes tackling demanding outdoor activities.
Fitness, courage, commitment and technique all matter in ice climbing and mountaineering. Appropriate equipment and high-quality clothing also play a crucial role. This was the starting point for Outdoor Research’s Alibi range.
Climbing a frozen waterfall or large icicles requires crampons and specialist ice tools to gain purchase on the ice. Water can drip from above, so clothing needs to keep moisture out while retaining warmth.
Alibi Jacket
The men’s and women’s Alibi Jacket used Ventia Hybrid construction. Its shoulders and hood were windproof and waterproof, protecting areas particularly exposed to moisture in alpine conditions. A warm tricot lining provided additional insulation in those areas.
The sleeves and torso used highly breathable, water-repellent fabric to release excess heat during strenuous ascents. The combination was intended to provide waterproofing where external moisture hit hardest and breathability where the climber perspired most.
The helmet-compatible hood had two adjustment points and could be removed when desired.
Alibi Pants
The durable men’s Alibi Pants were also intended for alpine use. They combined breathable, water-repellent softshell with waterproof laminated Ventia softshell.
At the seat, the Ventia fabric had a fleece backing for warmth during a well-earned rest on cold rock. Technical tailoring and anatomically shaped knees provided freedom of movement.
Other features included inset side pockets, a thigh pocket, zipped lower legs, edge protection, loops for securing the trouser legs to boots, and a bootlace hook.
