Salomon brings back the Squarre backpack
Salomon’s 2015 Squarre relaunch revived the square backpack that became a Swedish schoolyard favorite in the 1980s.

The Salomon Squarre returned in 2015, bringing back the durable materials and simple design of a backpack remembered by generations of users.
The square original reached stores in the early 1980s. Benny Grahn, sales and marketing manager at Salomon Footwear, saw its rise firsthand.
“Skiers started using it first, then it spread to schoolchildren,” he recalled. “It became extremely popular immediately and quickly turned into a craze. Demand was so strong that Swedes joined long waiting lists in sports stores. In 1983, 250,000 Squarre backpacks were sold in Sweden, more than in any other European country.”
An everyday backpack
The relaunched Squarre retained its predecessor’s look, with a retro design, durable fabric and a choice of versions and colors. It added a laptop compartment and had a stated hydrostatic head of 1,000 mm.
“The updated Squarre will certainly stir some nostalgia among people who went to school in the 1980s. Perhaps they will buy one for their children now,” said Grahn.
Launch price: SEK 400.
