Vibram FiveFingers Speed joins the barefoot-style running trend
The 2010 Speed model combined individual toe pockets with a thin sole and a laced mesh upper.

Demand for Vibram FiveFingers grew sharply in the year before this June 2010 article, driven by interest in barefoot-style running.
Head2Foot had introduced FiveFingers to Sweden four years earlier, initially targeting people active around water. Interest then spread to outdoor users and runners. The original report also noted recommendations from some foot-care practitioners, physiotherapists and orthopedists; it did not present clinical evidence of health benefits.
The new Speed model was designed to encourage a natural-feeling stride. A 4 mm outsole, 3 mm insole and separate toe pockets aimed to provide a barefoot-like sensation. The upper used ventilated mesh with conventional lacing. Listed weight was 163 g in size 43.
At the time, we hoped to test the Speed later that summer. We had only tried earlier FiveFingers models, which we had found enjoyable for running and walking.
