Suunto introduces the Ambit GPS adventure watch
The original Suunto Ambit brought GPS navigation, altitude, a 3D compass and training functions together in a wristwatch.

Suunto introduced the Ambit in 2012 as what it called the first true GPS watch for adventurers. It combined GPS navigation, an altimeter, a 3D compass, advanced heart-rate functions and more for skiing, hiking, trail running, mountaineering and everyday training.
Calling it a watch only partly described its capabilities. It could track elevation changes, speed and heart rate, offer weather information and assist navigation, all in a watch-like device worn on the wrist.
Outdoor functions
The GPS allowed users to store multiple waypoints, such as a favorite fishing spot or mushroom-picking location, and navigate using them. A track log recorded positions at intervals so a route could later be viewed on a map. Temperature information, a 3D compass and a barometer added information about weather, altitude and location.
Training functions
Suunto FusedSpeed™ combined GPS with a patented accelerometer to improve speed readings and respond more quickly to pace changes. Peak Training Effect supported heart-rate-based training intensity, while Recovery Time estimated when the user would be ready for another session. GPS navigation could help guide the wearer back after a workout, with data uploaded to Movescount.com for analysis.
The Ambit had a robust housing for demanding activities. Battery life was quoted at up to 50 hours in GPS mode, with a water-resistance rating of 100 meters. Software updates were available through Movescount.com.
