Therm-a-Rest-40th-Anniversary

In August 2011, Therm-a-Rest announced a limited-edition sleeping pad for 2012 to celebrate its forthcoming 40th anniversary.

Therm-a-Rest received a patent for its pad in 1972, when Cascade Designs was founded. The Seattle team began producing what it called the world’s first self-inflating sleeping pad, offering a new level of comfort and warmth. By 1985, it had made one million pads.

The anniversary model used the familiar yellow color and the original 1972 logo, hand-drawn by founder and then-chairman John Burroughs. Inside, an advanced lower-density foam core linked the retro appearance to modern construction. Therm-a-Rest described it as the most comfortable, thickest and warmest self-inflating pad in its Fast & Light® category.

Each pad would be individually numbered and fitted with a glow-in-the-dark valve. New Soft Grip fabric underneath was intended to prevent sliding on the tent floor. A women’s version would add insulation around the torso and feet.

The limited edition was due in stores in January 2012, while supplies lasted.
