German brand Vaude announced the Blue One for summer 2011, describing it as the world’s first bluesign-approved tent. It used recycled and organic materials and weighed 2.35 kg.

For outdoor enthusiasts, feeling close to nature can involve more than choosing a secluded campsite and waking to fresh air. Vaude’s announcement emphasized material choices as another part of that experience, presenting the Blue One as a tent for users concerned about the environmental impact of their equipment.

Independent textile specialists assessed the inner and outer tent materials and their manufacture. The resulting technical ripstop fabric, made from 65% recycled polyester and 35% organic cotton, met the bluesign standard. The dyes were also described as meeting the same environmental requirements.

Vaude promised a comfortable, wind-stable tent. The silicone-treated flysheet had a stated hydrostatic head of 1,200 mm.

The bluesign standard

The announcement described bluesign as an independent international textile standard covering yarn production, dyeing, weaving and fabric processing, alongside monitoring energy and natural-resource use. Its purpose was to assess the textile supply chain against environmental and health criteria. That assessment should not be read as a claim that a product has no environmental impact.

Vaude stated that it was the first outdoor supplier to adopt the standard, in 2001.
