In 2015, Airbnb announced an unusual addition to its “A Night At” series: a stay in a cable car at Courchevel, 2,700 meters above sea level, followed by first tracks at the French ski resort.

Within a few hours, the cable car was to be transformed into accommodation for four, with a large warm bed, sofa, rug and curtains. The stay was scheduled for March 6, with mulled wine on arrival and a traditional French Alpine dinner at the top of Saulire.

After the overnight stay, the guests would be positioned to make the first turns on the piste or the well-known Combe de Saulire off-piste descent.

The cable-car stay followed earlier “A Night At” experiences at Galeries Lafayette in Paris, footballer Andrés Iniesta’s vineyard, a KLM aircraft and an IKEA store. At the time, Airbnb described its marketplace as offering more than one million places to stay worldwide, including locations not previously available for overnight visits.

“People who choose Airbnb are looking for an experience. This is ideal for those seeking unusual accommodation and goes hand in hand with the adventures most people only experience once in a lifetime,” said Even Heggernes, Airbnb’s Nordic manager.

How the historical contest worked

Entrants were asked to visit the Airbnb listing, select an available date and explain why they wanted to win. The entry deadline was February 26, 2015, at 11:59 p.m.

If the winner lived outside France, Airbnb offered return flights and transfers for the winner and three friends. This was a 2015 competition and is no longer an invitation to enter.
