This summer we tested the Bergans Glittertind, a 55-liter backpack with the SPINE carrying system that provides revolutionary freedom of movement, awarded the Outdoor Industry Award 2012. This carrying system combined with the backpack’s weight and functionality makes it an appreciated companion on shorter trips.
SPINE keeps the backpack fixed to the center of your back. The frame is rotated twice (see image) forming an innovative double spiral-shaped steel spring frame. The back panel is thus divided into three segments that move independently of each other; hips and shoulders are flexible and move completely naturally and individually. SPINE lets the body bend, stretch, and move freely with the Glittertind on your back. That’s how Bergans themselves describe their carrying system, and we can only agree. Freedom of movement is excellent in virtually all positions regardless of pack weight. It offloads well onto the hips and sits well over the shoulders. They’ve nailed it here!
The backpack itself, like many others, has several different openings. A top opening with double closure, a “sleeping bag opening” at the bottom, and the front can be opened so you can more easily see what you’ve packed when it’s time to dig for food, a change of clothes, or whatever you might be looking for. The divider between the main compartment and the smaller bottom one can of course be opened or closed as needed. The inside of the front is covered by an appreciated mesh pocket where various small items can be stored, and the top lid is spacious with two storage pockets.
On the outside, there are stretch panels on the front and sides. The panels function as side pockets, and it’s no problem to stow water bottles and, in this case, a first aid kit. The front panel is generously sized and you can easily tuck a shell jacket there for quick access when needed. The storage space, accessibility, front mesh pocket, and stretch panels make the whole thing feel well-thought-out and practical.
This is a backpack for shorter to medium-length trips. It’s light, has a comfortable carrying system, and is easy to pack. Beyond what’s described, it also has several adjustment options with compression straps on the sides and front – though almost bordering on too many, as it can feel a bit cluttered. A separate pocket for the rain cover is missing, however – that would have been needed.
