As we all know, a certain calm often comes over us when we’re outdoors, whether it’s for work, walking, or just relaxing. The benefits of being out in the open are many – here are some of them.

Physical and Mental

The benefits of hiking around in nature and embracing outdoor life are both mental and physical. The body gets a chance to recover, and as a person you can often feel the changes.

One of the most important aspects of being outdoors, which has a direct impact on our health, is the well-documented benefit of increasing your vitamin D levels. It’s when sunlight hits the skin that a process starts in the body, generating the essential vitamin we need to function.

Studies also show that vitamin D has protective effects against heart attacks, strokes, and depression, and that it strengthens your immune system. In the Nordic countries, it’s often discussed that the population needs to take supplements during the winter months because people generally get less of this vitamin due to the weather. Despite the fact that the body can only store a limited amount of vitamin D, you increase your chances of optimal levels by being active outdoors.

You Learn to Appreciate the Little Things

When you’re out in nature, you quickly find peace, appreciate the small things, and can enjoy what’s around you. Meanwhile, you get the chance to “detox” from TVs, phones, computers – things you typically have at home that provide instant gratification.

If you want to calm your mind and feel peace in body and soul, outdoor life is an excellent way to do it.

You Find New Ways to Socialize

Although good times often involve playing football, gathering a group to bet on sports for your favorite team, traveling to see away games, etc., you can also spend time together in nature. One way is to gather your friends and socialize while conquering a smaller mountain or discovering new forests together. These kinds of activities often surpass other group options like parties and dinners.

So instead of staying home and choosing from all the entertainment shows on TV, make sure to reduce your sedentary time, take your friends out on an adventure and experience the fantastic nature together – and best of all, make it a tradition.

When you, your friends, or family are outdoors and not using a car or similar, you often automatically get exercise as a bonus. Whether it’s on terrain and mountains or crossing streams and valleys, your and your friends’ bodies will benefit from the exercise you’re getting.
