On Thursday, the government adopted the bill “The Future of Outdoor Life.” It is the first outdoor recreation bill in Sweden.

The bill means that Svenskt Friluftsliv (Swedish Outdoor Association) will distribute government funding to outdoor organizations. This will start in 2011.

– This sets the course for outdoor policy going forward, says Ulf Silvander, Secretary General of Svenskt Friluftsliv.

The goal of outdoor policy is “to support people’s opportunities to spend time in nature and engage in outdoor recreation, where the Right of Public Access (allemansrätten) forms the foundation of outdoor life.” In everyday terms, this goal means protecting the Right of Public Access – nature should be accessible to everyone. The bill’s goal is also for outdoor life to contribute to rural development and regional growth. But also that municipalities should take strong responsibility for nature close to urban areas.

The bill is 2009/10:238
