Fly & Bike: Arrive in Bodø and explore by bicycle

In summer 2015, SAS’s direct Stockholm–Bodø flight took just an hour and a half. With rental bicycles available at the airport, local adventures were an easy ride away. Norway called the idea Fly & Bike.

Nordland offers dramatic mountains and some of Norway’s most striking coastline. SAS had launched its direct Stockholm–Bodø route in 2014 and, following a successful first season, continued it in 2015 as a simple option for an active Norwegian summer. Travelers could rent bicycles as soon as they arrived.

“Fly & Bike means renting a bicycle directly at the airport. It is as simple as renting a car,” said Robert Nygårdhs, Visitnorway’s marketing manager in Sweden. “A bicycle makes it easy to explore Bodø and visit local sights and attractions.”

Bodø made a useful base for day trips to the Norwegian Aviation Museum, Bodø Cathedral and Bodøsjøen Open-Air Museum. Longer outings could reach Saltstraumen, described as the world’s strongest tidal current, and the historic trading settlement of Kjerringøy. The airport offered luggage storage and showers.

The direct SAS service between Stockholm Arlanda and Bodø was scheduled from June 28 to August 9, 2015. Besides Bodø, six other airports in Nordland offered bicycle rentals.
