Platypus Origin 5 review
We tested the Platypus Origin 5 on bike rides and runs, assessing its fit, hydration system, weather protection and five-liter gear compartment.
For the 2011 season, Platypus planned to launch a series of backpacks for high-intensity activities. Called Origin, the range came in five sizes. We asked cycling enthusiast Johan to test the Origin 5 during a few training sessions.
The Origin 5 has room for five liters of gear and is designed for outings lasting around three to four hours. A separate compartment holds a two-liter Big Zip SL reservoir. Tough ripstop fabric and taped seams mean extra dry bags are unnecessary. Both main compartments have waterproof zippers, while a mesh pocket holds small items and three smaller external stretch pockets offer space for snacks.
Johan Wetso took the Origin 5 on training rides over roots and rocks around Västerås. A committed cyclist, he rides road, time trial, cyclocross and mountain bikes. Here is his verdict:
“The first thing that made me like this product was its fit. The shoulder straps feel well thought out and comfortable. Once I fastened the chest and waist straps, I forgot I was wearing it. Occasionally, a gentle sloshing sound reminded me to take a drink.
“As with similar products, you can lock the mouthpiece to stop liquid flowing through it. This model has a more convenient solution than others I have encountered, especially in autumn when gloves are more or less essential. The reservoir opens and closes neatly for filling, then locks securely into the pack with quick-release fittings. Inside the pack is a useful mesh pocket for a camera, phone or keys. My only criticism is that the mouthpiece felt a little large; otherwise, the flow and function were good. It is a very good product with uses well beyond cycling.”
I also took the Origin 5 on several trail runs and, like Johan, found both the fit and function very good. It stays close to the back without moving around, and the hydration tube is easy to reach. The reservoir suspension is particularly clever: it keeps the bladder from collapsing in a way that could interrupt the water supply while there is still water inside.
With winter approaching, it also looks well suited to skiing. For that, the Platypus Bite Valve & Drink Tube Insulator is important to keep the water from freezing. The close-fitting mesh pocket all but eliminates rattling keys. The Origin 5’s main advantage is its gear compartment, which provides room for a couple of extra layers.
The Origin 5 was due to launch in spring 2011 at a recommended price of SEK 1,100. Like the Origin 5, the other packs were offered in blue, black and green. The two largest models also came in two back lengths:
- Origin 3: SEK 975.
- Origin 9: SEK 1,250.
- Origin 22.18 and 22.20: SEK 1,800.
- Origin 32.20 and 32.22: SEK 2,000, including a three-liter Big Zip SL.
This is an excellent pack for cycling and other high-intensity activities. The I Love Outdoor editorial team recommends the Origin 5.
