Swedish weather is not always reliable, so it pays to be ready when warm days arrive. Here are seven swimming favorites from Reseguiden’s 2010 selection, spanning Piteå in the north to Malmö in the south.
1. Böda Sand, Öland
A lovely long sandy beach on the east coast of northern Öland, with a campsite and plenty of activities nearby. It was highlighted as a family-friendly choice in one of Sweden’s sunnier areas.
2. Tylösand, near Halmstad
For a touch of California in Sweden, Tylösand offers a lively atmosphere and after-beach entertainment. Expect plenty of people on the sand.
3. Falsterbo Strandbad and Skanörs Havsbad, southern Skåne
Between Malmö and Trelleborg, these two beaches form part of a small seaside paradise. The original guide highlighted Falsterbo’s after-beach scene and Skanör’s fish shop, dining area and smokehouse.
4. Långholmen, Stockholm
You do not have to leave the city for a swim. Långholmen, by Söder Mälarstrand, offers both sandy and rocky swimming spots for a quick dip without traveling into the archipelago.
5. Hållö, near Smögen
This rugged rocky island is known for swimming at Marmorbassängen, with its turquoise water. The guide also recommended waffles at the summer café in Utposten hostel. Beyond the hostel, the island’s few buildings include its lighthouse and a small chapel.
6. Pite Havsbad, Piteå
Often called the Riviera of northern Sweden, Pite Havsbad has a kilometer-long sandy beach. Beach volleyball and other activities, including go-karting, helped make it a family favorite.
7. Ribersborg Beach, Malmö
Known locally as Ribban, this popular summer beach is within easy reach of the city center. Its shallow water appeals to families, while jetties provide access farther out.
