A free ski day for 20 school classes
The 2011 Outdoor Day Scholarship offered transport, rentals, lift passes and lessons to selected Swedish school classes.
In November 2010, Svenskt Sportforum announced the 2011 Outdoor Day Scholarship with SkiStar, SLAO and the Swedish physical education teachers’ association. Twenty classes would receive a free bus trip to a nearby ski slope, ski rental, lift passes and ski lessons.
The initiative responded to a decline in school outdoor days. Many pupils never had a chance to try skiing, particularly if their parents did not ski or could not afford transport, equipment rental and lift passes.
“We established the scholarship three years ago and the response was enormous,” said Svenskt Sportforum CEO Claes Forsberg, who initiated the program. “There are many PE teachers who would love to introduce their pupils to downhill skiing but cannot.”
Nineteen local ski areas around Sweden agreed to host classes. Applications were open to grades 4–9, provided the school was no more than three hours by bus from a participating slope.
The application deadline was November 30, 2010. Successful classes were to be announced on Svenskt Sportforum’s website.
