Helly Hansen’s Winter Duel app feature invited runners to challenge Facebook friends or other athletes around the world over five weeks. In each duel, the runner covering the greatest distance won.

The app recorded distance, time, weather information and mapped routes. Participants could compare performances with fellow runners and Helly Hansen ambassadors such as Kaylin Richardson and Anna Haag. Each user created a profile, and automatic matching paired them with someone of a similar fitness level, based on running frequency and average weekly distance.

An opponent might be an enthusiastic runner on the other side of the world or one of Helly Hansen’s skiing, climbing or running athletes. A chat function let the pair communicate during the five-week contest.

The campaign described in the original December 2014 announcement ran through February 2015. The participant with the highest overall distance would be invited to one of two Helly Hansen events: the Boulder Bolder run in Colorado or Beauty & the Beast, described in the announcement as Britain’s toughest marathon. The prize included entry, transport and accommodation.
