Vikingarännet 2015 canceled
Mild weather and unsafe conditions prevented the skating race from taking place on February 8, 2015.
Vikingarännet 2015, scheduled for Sunday, February 8, was canceled. For the second year in a row, mild weather stopped the skating race, which had been moved to Drevviken in Stockholm.
The race had already relocated from its usual Uppsala–Stockholm course, but problems also developed on Drevviken in southern Stockholm. With the full support of the volunteer team, organizers canceled the event to protect skaters’ safety.
“Snowfall over the past few days has left 10–15 cm of snow and slush on the plowed course. Clearing it requires heavier machinery than usual. However, the weight of the snow has pressed the ice down and it has become thinner, making it impossible to take suitable machines out. The colder weather in the forecasts has also failed to arrive, leaving very little chance of refreezing before Sunday,” said race secretary general Anders Tysk.
Organizers planned to discuss the race’s future during the following week, hoping to find a solution for 2016.
