Aclima WoolNet – Well-Ventilated and Warming

Together with the Aclima Hood Sweater, the WoolNet Shirt Crew Neck has been tested during various activities. WoolNet is a mesh base layer in merino wool that provides excellent breathability while also being very warm and comfortable to wear.

Aclima WoolNet is a mesh base layer made from 120-gram merino wool with exceptional breathability. It’s a garment for those with varying activity levels who don’t have a warm shower within reach… Body odor, as we know, doesn’t thrive in wool. The garment is very light and comfortable to wear. The sides, shoulders, elbows, and knees feature rib knitting for better comfort. The garments have undergone Total Easy Care treatment, making them itch-free and reducing shrinkage issues. In short, that’s how Aclima themselves describe the WoolNet products, and our test was conducted based on these premises.

Against the skin, WoolNet is very pleasant and the fit is excellent. The non-mesh sections not only contribute to extra comfort but are likely also a major factor in extending the base layer’s lifespan, especially over the elbows and in the shoulder and neck area. The generous length is also appreciated, as it’s easy to tuck into the waistband, providing pleasant extra warmth over the rear. That the garment breathes extremely well is perhaps not surprising given the construction, and this applies to the rib-knitted sections as well. All the extra air pockets created by the mesh construction mean it retains heat better than any merino base layer this reviewer has tried.

The absolute best user experience with this base layer so far was during an extended long-distance skating tour at around minus eight degrees, offering both wonderful tailwinds and moderately challenging headwinds. Over the Shirt Crew Neck, the Aclima Hood Sweater and Fjällräven Kalfjäll Softshell Jacket were worn, and the cooperation between these layers was perfect. Three thin layers for the season, but despite working up quite a sweat, the wool did its job and kept me comfortably warm. The moisture transport from the base layer to layer two and then on to the jacket was also very impressive. WoolNet hasn’t been used on an extended trip, but it has been worn during several different activities without washing, and after use and airing out, the base layer smelled exactly as promised – like nothing.

WoolNet is recommended by Aclima for medium/high activity where a bit of extra insulation is needed year-round – such as mountain trips, cross-country skiing, hunting, and ski touring. Add long-distance skating to the list and it’s even more complete. Wearing a mesh base layer may not be the most attractive look, but it’s highly effective and warmly recommended for your upcoming adventures.
