Helium II – Minimalist and durable jacket from Outdoor Research

We’ve tested the Helium II Jacket from Outdoor Research which at 180 grams is a true lightweight, perfect for both intensive and more relaxed activities. Despite the low weight, Outdoor Research doesn’t compromise on details and materials.

The Outdoor Research Helium II Jacket is an updated version of its predecessor. Beyond details, it’s 6% lighter, has 10% better breathability, and 30% better water protection than the original. It’s made from 2.5-layer Pertex® Shield+ DS that withstands a 20,000 mm water column and has a ventilation capacity of 20,000 g/m/24h. The material is soft and flexible and isn’t at all as crinkly as materials this thin can sometimes feel.

The zipper is water-resistant with a storm flap behind it, and the chest pocket zipper is also water-resistant. The seams are taped and the jacket has a fully adjustable hood that provides good protection against wind, rain, and foul weather. The sleeves have elastic cuffs that could ideally have been a bit tighter for slightly better protection.

The Helium II has been along for all kinds of occasions during the summer and has proven to be a very good companion for sudden weather changes. Since it can be packed into a built-in stuff pocket on the inside of the jacket at the bottom next to the zipper, it takes minimal space in your pack and you can easily place it in the top lid or side pocket of your backpack, clip it to a climbing harness, or keep it in your work bag. You probably won’t even notice you have it with you until it’s needed. The Helium II Jacket is a chameleon that suits a multitude of weather situations, even tough conditions where both weather and heavy packs wear on the material. One detail, a very small one, that has been really appreciated is the textured surface on what you grip when pulling up the zipper. You get an incredibly good grip where neither bad weather conditions nor gloves cause you to slip. Brilliant!
