Garmin now presents the next generation HD action cameras, VIRB X and VIRB XE. Compact and in a new format with more mounting options, they film in HD and wide-angle. They are waterproof down to 50 meters and so robust and water-resistant that you don’t need a dive housing when filming underwater.

VIRB X and VIRB XE have high-quality image and audio features and deliver an entirely new user experience with G-Metrix. Using a multitude of built-in and wireless sensors, G-Metrix captures data such as speed and G-force and converts it into animated information on the image to create a more exciting user experience. With Garmin’s software, you can showcase your adventures with more detail and create polished action videos more easily. G-Metrix works together with Garmin’s product range regardless of activity. Analyze your power from your Vector power pedals, display your G-force during aerobatic flying, relive the speed and climbs made during a day on the slopes with the help of fēnix 3, or see the acceleration and top speed on the race track. Together with G-Metrix, VIRB X and VIRB XE are the ultimate action cameras.

– With a new design, improved recording options, built-in sensors, and the introduction of G-Metrix, this represents a major step in the development of action cameras for both amateurs and professionals, says Dan Bartel, sales director for Garmin International.

– We are extremely pleased to be able to offer these cameras so that the market can not only see the film but also how far, fast, and crazy their adventures really are.

Designed for action

Film normally or in wide-angle – VIRB XE is designed to film professionally in HD quality at 1440p/30fps and 1080p/60fps with super slow-motion, image stabilization, and at different zoom levels. VIRB X films in HD quality at 1080p/30fps and 720/60fps with slow-motion and different zoom options. With a still image sensor, both models can take sharp still photos and photo series with up to 12MP image quality. Additionally, VIRB XE has Pro mode with more advanced manual camera settings for white balance, sharpness and color profile, ISO limit, and exposure time.

Both VIRB X and VIRB XE are waterproof down to 50 meters and don’t need an extra dive housing. With a flat glass lens, underwater images are crystal clear and the transition between below and above the water surface is droplet-free. The new design includes a built-in microphone that provides very clear audio, even underwater. There is Bluetooth for easy use of headsets and external microphones. VIRB X and XE also have a new secure mount with an anti-slip system that you can tighten so it better handles vibrations and impacts.

G-Metrix uses action data recorded by built-in and connected sensors on VIRB X and XE to supercharge your action film with more excitement and emotion. With G-Metrix, you can get data from high-sensitivity GPS, accelerometer, and gyro, as well as from compatible devices and accessories like HRM heart rate strap, fēnix 3 multisport watch, or Vector power meter to capture real-time activity and performance.

VIRB X and XE are also compatible with Bluetooth OBD accessories and capture vehicle data such as speed, RPM, and throttle input.

Via built-in Wi-Fi, you can pair the camera with your smartphone or tablet and the VIRB Mobile app. With VIRB Mobile, you can livestream your video so you see what you’re filming and control multiple cameras simultaneously. You can also quick-edit and overlay G-Metrix data and upload and share your films. If the camera should go missing, you can also track it to its last known position.

Compact and easy to use

With VIRB X and XE, you don’t have to guess how it works or wonder about how to film a good video. On the high-resolution 1-inch screen, you can quickly and easily change settings. And with a single button press, you wake the camera and can start and stop recording. There is also a dedicated photo button so you can take pictures at any time, even while filming. The rechargeable and replaceable battery provides up to two hours of filming at 1080p. The camera also has waterproof connectors for charging and power supply.

Easy to edit

VIRB Edit™, Garmin’s editing software, can automatically generate great, finished films with G-Metrix data. Or you can choose to manually review and edit the film, adjust the G-Metrix data, and add music. Using GPS timestamps, VIRB Edit can automatically sync film clips from different cameras for smooth transitions when filming with multiple cameras. You can also create your own gauges and charts for a more unique video. The VIRB Mobile App can also be used for quick editing on both smartphones and tablets. With the app, you can crop and overlay G-Metrix instruments and add music, making uploading and sharing even faster and easier.

VIRB X and XE are expected to be available in June 2015. VIRB X will have a recommended price of 2,999 SEK and VIRB XE 3,999 SEK
