Maglite XL200 LED Flashlight

We’re testing the MAGLITE® XL200™ LED – a flashlight with classic design but completely new technology. This new flashlight is the brightest member of the XL family at a full 172 lumens.

It works as a combination of its two predecessors, the XL100™ and XL50™. This means you use quick clicks to navigate between the five different function modes, while it also has a dimmer function activated by a simple wrist movement – made possible by a built-in gyro sensor.

Of course, the XL200™ also has a lock-out feature that prevents unintentional use.

This is an extremely durable model, like many other MAGLITE® lights. The XL200 comes with three AAA batteries that go into a small plastic holder, which is then inserted into the lamp. Battery life is approximately 2.5 hours at maximum brightness and up to 218 hours at low brightness.

The brightness is impressive and the form factor feels comfortable. Not too big and heavy, but not too small either. Otherwise there’s a risk of it being difficult to pull out of your pack or pocket, especially with gloves on. The lamp is 122 mm long with a diameter of about 25 mm. Weight lands at just over 100 grams.

The only downsides to this lamp are possibly that it quickly gets cold in winter, just like many other aluminum lamps. Also, it takes some practice and training to quickly cycle through the different functions. Combined with cold and stiff fingers, the button presses become quite tricky.

The recommended price is SEK 795, which feels like good value considering the quality and function.
