Petzl TIKKA² CORE review
We tested the rechargeable Petzl TIKKA² CORE and its computer software for adjusting brightness and battery runtime.

Over spring and summer 2011, we tested the Petzl TIKKA®² CORE: a rechargeable headlamp whose LED output can be configured with a few clicks on a computer.
Anyone familiar with the Petzl Tikka Plus will know what to expect from the lamp itself. For newcomers, it has four LEDs, two brightness levels and a flashing mode, much like many other headlamps. The clever part of the CORE concept is that you can both recharge the battery and adjust output using the supplied computer software. This review focuses on that feature.
The software, OS by Petzl, runs on Mac and Windows and is easy to use. The screenshots below illustrate the controls: a vertical axis sets brightness as a percentage, while the horizontal axis sets runtime in hours. In regulated mode, illustrated in image 3, the lamp maintains the chosen brightness for the specified number of hours, then continues at about 20% output until the battery runs out. In unregulated mode, shown in image 4, it starts at full brightness and gradually dims; in that example, it goes out after 14 hours.
The battery charges while you adjust the settings, and a test button lets you check the output. These options make the lamp enjoyable to use and allow you to tailor it to your planned activity. If the rechargeable battery runs out, you can remove it and use ordinary AAA batteries. Carrying spares therefore provides a backup against being left in the dark outdoors.
We used the lamp on numerous occasions and it worked very well. We also set it to maximum illumination for seven hours and left it running continuously: it delivered the promised runtime. We hope it continues to do so after many recharge cycles.
We already trusted Petzl’s Tikka range. These added options are a welcome bonus for outdoor enthusiasts who also enjoy useful technology they can tinker with.
At the time, the lamp was stocked by most well-equipped outdoor retailers, with a recommended price of about SEK 950.
