Vikingarännet’s planned 2015 move to Drevviken
Organizers planned to move Vikingarännet to Drevviken on February 8, 2015, but a later update announced that the race was canceled.
Update: Vikingarännet 2015 was canceled. The announcement below describes the earlier plan to hold the race on Drevviken.
Vikingarännet’s organizers had planned to use Drevviken’s ice on February 8, 2015. It would have been the first move away from the usual Uppsala–Stockholm course since the race began in 1999.
“Even if the week before the race is very cold, the ice on the usual route will not have time to grow thick enough for an event like Vikingarännet. To give the event continuity and improve the likelihood of holding it, the management has decided to use Drevviken near Farsta. The lake freezes early, giving us an alternative for future warm winters, although the regular course will always be our first choice,” said secretary-general Anders Tysk.
Organizers hoped the change would increase interest and attract newcomers to skating on natural ice. Vikingarännet was to remain 80 km, completed as four laps, while Tjejrännet and Halvrännet would each be 40 km over two laps. Stockholm, Tyresö, Haninge and Huddinge municipalities cooperated on the proposed course.
